I really like this film. It’s funny and very moving at times. Martin Scorsese seems like an unlikely choice to direct a film focused on a female character, but apparently, Ellen Burstyn chose him after seeing MEAN STREETS and wanted him to bring that gritty realism to this film.
A wonderful cast (many of whom show up again in TAXI DRIVER). 12-year-old Jodie Foster, in a small role, is already an amazingly accomplished actress at this point. You also have to look closely to catch a 7-year-old Laura Dern sitting at the counter in the diner.
