Viewing Notes

A totally beguiling romantic comedy. The four couples mostly seem unhappy at the beginning, but after a merry-go-round of romantic interactions, they somehow wind up with the mate they were meant to be with at the end. The dialogue is witty and the cast is wonderful, especially the four leading ladies.

This was the turning point in Bergman’s career:  it brought him international fame, and was the first of three consecutive artistic successes (THE SEVENTH SEAL and WILD STRAWBERRIES to follow).
