Viewing Notes

A really powerful film that sort of marks the end of one period of Bergman’s career. It’s a look at the moral ambiguity of religion and the clash of Christianity and paganism.

Surprisingly brutal and shocking for a film of this era. The scene of rape and murder is especially disturbing.

This won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1960, and the legendary collaboration between Bergman and Sven Nykvist really begins here.
