Viewing Notes

I have real admiration for this film. I love the spareness and how the wintry landscape is a perfect metaphor for the clergyman’s crisis of faith (“If there is no God…would it really make any difference?”).

Gunnar Bjornstrand is a regular in Bergman’s films and I think this is his best performance. Ingrid Thulin is also very good. She has a six-minute-long monologue looking directly into the camera that is terrific.
