Bergman goes avant-garde. This is an amazing film and one of the most analyzed/debated in cinema history. Everyone has their own interpretations (are the two women the same person?, etc.) and I don’t pretend to understand it all. But, half a century later, it’s still a mesmerizing work.
The b&w cinematography, and the use of close-ups, is sublime, and some of the imagery has become iconic. This is certainly one of the 2 or 3 greatest films in Bergman’s career. Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann (her first film for Bergman) are superb.
