At the most basic level, it’s a vampire movie, but there’s so much more going on. The power of music, the black experience in Jim Crow era (do the vampires represent the bloodsucking white southerners?), etc.
The cast is outstanding. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers (Smoke and Stack) and gives nuance to both characters. The other standouts for me were Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo, and Miles Caton makes an impressive film debut (great guitar playing and singing as well).
The cinematography is gorgeous, and the music is foot-stompingly good.
