Viewing Notes

I think this is one of Bergman’s best films. A sort of unofficial trilogy (along with HOUR OF THE WOLF and THE PASSION OF ANNA) dealing with marriage under pressure (Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman are the main couple in each film).

In this one, outside events (an unexplained civil war) lead to physical and psychological conflict in the couple. Frightening and suspenseful, this is a strong anti-war statement by Bergman. Von Sydow and Ullman are amazing, as is Gunnar Bjornstrand.
