Overview

Gentleman gangster Max and his partner, Riton, pull off their last, most successful heist and find themselves comfortable enough to retire in the style they enjoy. However, Max confides the details of the theft to his younger mistress, Josey—who has secretly taken up with ambitious young rival gangster Angelo. Angelo then has Riton kidnapped and demands the stash of gold as ransom, which threatens Max’s dreams of the perfect retirement.

Viewing Notes

A terrific noir with all that wonderful cool French fatalism. The great Jean Gabin is perfect as the world-weary gangster who just wants to retire after a huge score, but circumstances prevent it.

Jacques Becker’s approach is unique, showing the characters doing seemingly mundane things (brushing their teeth, getting ready for bed, etc.), but which allows us to know them better (Becker once said, humorously, that his dream was to make a film with no beginning, no end, and virtually no story!).

The supporting cast includes Lino Ventura and a very young Jeanne Moreau.
