This is one of Altman’s best films. I love the atmosphere created in this Pacific Northwest pioneering town: dark, rainy, muddy, snowy, grimy, etc. Just watching it makes you want to get bundled up under a warm blanket. There’s a beauty to the underlit cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond.
The large cast of characters is one of Altman’s trademarks, as well as the overlapping dialogue and the lived-in feeling of the scenes. It’s also a commentary on corrupt American capitalism.
