An excellent WW2 drama, following the day-to-day experiences of an infantry division: the long stretches of inaction and boredom, and then the sudden violence of combat. It’s much grittier and realistic than other (Hollywood-ized) war films of this period.
Robert Mitchum got his one and only Oscar nomination (for Supporting Actor) and became a star after this film.
There were parts that almost reminded me of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and made me think that this film must have influenced Spielberg.
