Mysterious and difficult, but hugely rewarding. I think this is Bergman’s first film that deals specifically with death and the way people behave when faced with it.
The color red is featured prominently (the sets, the scene transitions, etc.) and Bergman described it as the “interior of the soul.”
Sven Nykvist won the Oscar for the cinematography, and there are magnificent performances from Harriet Andersson, Liv Ullman, and Ingrid Thulin.
