Fårö Document 1979 (1979)

Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Documentary

Overview

In 1969, with Sven Nykvist as cinematographer, Ingmar Bergman made The Fårö Document, a film that ended with a rather pessimist view of the island’s future. One of the scenes in the film is of a school-bus and its young passengers. To these and to the realities ten years later Bergman returns in the long documentary Fårö Document 1979.

Viewing Notes

Bergman intended to do a FARO DOCUMENT every 10 years (similar to Michael Apted’s “7” series). He even mentions, at the end, about doing a “Faro Document 1989”, though he never got around to it.

Shot all in color this time, it’s not as bleak as the first film while still acknowledging the hardships and potential loss of this way of life.
