I’ve long wanted to see this film, and it lived up to expectations. Alan Sharp’s exceptional original screenplay creates three strong characters: a getaway driver who’s back on the job after nine years away (George C. Scott), a hotheaded professional killer (Tony Musante), and a young woman who’s accepted her role as a mob “girlfriend” (Trish Van Devere).
Scott gives a wonderfully textured performance as a wounded man who has something to prove, and Sharp’s script allows his relationship with the criminal and his girl to take unexpected detours. Fleischer’s direction is strong and elegantly simple. Nuanced photography by Sven Nykvist and colorful music by Jerry Goldsmith add to the top-notch production values.
Reportedly, John Huston fought with Scott over script rewrites and quit the picture, to be replaced by Fleischer, and something similar happened with leading lady Tina Aumont. Regardless, this is a bit more than a minor gem.
