Viewing Notes

Crackling newspaper yarn, by turns cynical, sincere, sarcastic, and stirring. The comedy is played very broadly, but it’s suffused with such an intoxicating affection for newspapers that it still plays strongly.

As director, Jack Webb leans too heavily on music cues. He makes for an effective lead, though, and is supported splendidly by a cast that includes the wonderfully blustery William Conrad.
