I had no idea what to expect walking in to the theater to see Red White & Blue, all I knew is that one of the locations in the movie was at my friend Brian Kelly’s house just right around the corner from where I live, that and the movie was entirely shot in Austin. While some might find it a novelty to watch movies and TV shows shot in their neck of the woods, I find it distracting. It’s especially distracting when you have sat on the same couch as the main character. Anyway on to what I really think of the movie Red White & Blue.
This movie is as a friend put it, a slow burn. You have to wait for every ounce of emotion to be ripped from the characters. There is emotional brutality that 99.9% of the population will never be able to comprehend, and it then comes with relief and forgiveness. Then the most brutal scenes emotionally end the film. You really have to wait wait for an extraordinarily brutal movie to feel the full weight of the decisions of each of the characters. The low budget makes the film more real as if you are the hidden character of the movie.
Excellent, excellent film.
