Viewing Notes

Best Worst Movie is a documentary about the rise of Troll 2 as a cult hit and the people behind the movie. It’s written and directed by the guy who played the main kid in the movie, Michael Stephenson and mostly follows George Hardy, who played the dad.

What Best Worst Movie does very well is show how the people behind the movie really put their all into the movie and then faded into obscurity not realizing that diehard horror and movie fans had picked up on it and were having special showings of the movie, getting others into the genius that is Troll 2. We get to watch George Hardy go from being a well known hometown dentist in the middle of nowhere Alabama to traveling around seeing Troll 2 with movie theaters full of rabid fans. It’s a treat seeing this genuinely nice guy discover that something he did twenty something years ago become something he’s proud of. Even down to having a show of the movie in his town and going door to door handing out flyers trying to explain the movie to people by giving them his famous “You can’t piss on hospitality line” to mostly straight faces.

One really interesting thing about the documentary was seeing the director, Claudio Fragasso who to this day swears it’s a good movie and that the actors who say they didn’t like the movie when they saw it are just dogs. I really appreciate that he thinks Troll 2 is a work of genius.

If I had the pleasure of seeing this last year I would of put it on a top ten list, as it’s one of the better documentaries I saw (given I never saw The Cove). Very much enjoyed it and it’s pairs well with watching Troll 2 to keep things fresh.
