Love Donnie Darko and am just plain confused by Southland Tales, but also don’t just outright hate it. I’m also a huge Richard Matheson fan and his original story “Button, Button” is a classic Twilight Zone episode.
Kelly takes that story and expands upon it. The stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella seem to gel well in the movie. My love of the storyline really had me into the movie. It was nice seeing Kelly tackle something without it being to grandiose, for a change. Sure, there’s some connection to the Mars landers and NASA and then some “Water Coffin Triptychs” but all in all the movie worked for me. I thought it paced well and I liked how everything played out.
It’s not a Darko, but for me it was better than Southland Tales and showed me that Kelly has a route back to doing something truly amazing.
