Fish Tank follows a young British girl who loves to dance but otherwise lives an empty life. She has a mother who is not only distant but outright negative towards her. Things change when her mother brings home a new boyfriend and she starts to fall for him.
Not sure why, but Fish Tank is getting a lot of praise on the indie film circuit. The entire cast, other than Michael Fassbender is pretty much newbies, including the lead, Katie Jarvis, do an amazing job. In fact it’s Katie’s unflinching honest portrayal that I found to be the best thing about Fish Tank. She really does a fantastic job.
All in all, though, while I liked Fish Tank quite a bit it brought nothing much new to the table. Hell, Shane Meadows has done the disaffected British youth thing before and did it better. There’s something about the lead being female, maybe, but it’s still not too original.
