Overview

In the cramped, cluttered confines of Shopsin’s, a legendary hole-in-the-wall diner in New York’s Greenwich Village, eccentric chef Kenny Shopsin holds court—serving up an absurdly massive menu alongside his razor-sharp wit and unfiltered philosophies on life, food, and human nature. As the family-run institution faces a forced relocation, this intimate documentary captures the controlled chaos of Kenny’s world, where every customer is a character and every meal is a performance. A love letter to stubborn individuality and the art of doing things your own way.

Viewing Notes

I’m a fan of documentaries about crazy subjects and while I don’t think Kenny Shopsin is crazy, he’s definitely a character. He’s been running a grocery cum restaurant in NY’s Greenwich Village for over 30 years. His menu has over 200 items that he makes by hand. Not only that but he’s very particular about his customers. No parties of 5 and once you try and sit with 5 you’re out and don’t come back, EVER. No to go orders, EVER. No just coffee, you have to eat.

I loved this documentary and having a character like Shopsin is what makes it so compelling. The guy is full of his own philosophies and it follows him moving from his original location to a new, larger one due to issues with rent.

Since I liked it so much I really want to pick up his book.
