The Stepfather is a remake of an old horror film that stars Terry O’Quinn. I’ve not seen it so I can’t base anything I saw versus that one. It does seem to be kind of beloved by my horror friends. However, there is only hate for this remake.
It’s not unfounded. While I didn’t hate the film, it brings little to nothing new to the table. The film builds so predictably, has so few interesting turns and such flat performances that I’d be kind to say it was mediocre. If I wasn’t such a fan of Dylan Walsh on Nip/Tuck, Amber Heard in Hidden Palms/Mandy Lane and Penn Badgley in Gossip Girl, I might of hated this much more. For one, Amber Heard is in her underwear or a bikini about 95% of the time in this movie. Given she was 95% of the time nude in The Informers (a terrible film!), this isn’t much of a stretch for her.
Dylan Walsh is creepy enough I guess but never hit the edge of making me really see him as someone to fear. He’s better off as a plastic surgeon.
All in all, Stepfather was totally forgettable.
