I watched this as part of HorrorSquad.com’s new movie club idea where a bunch of people watch the same film and then talk about it later.
Glad I did too, because while I have a vague memory of a trailer for this it had completely fallen off my radar. Tragic too, because it’s directed by the guy who did Blair Witch, the weak Blair Witch 2 and the completely fucking horrendous Seventh Moon. This is easily better than Seventh Moon and Blair Witch 2 but a different beast that Blair Witch and yet still awesome.
Rednecks capture an alien because the aliens had captured and probed them when they were young and caused the death of one of their brothers. Great premise right? And it works. It’s never quite a comedy, which is good because that would hinder it. Any humor is from them being rednecks but the movie is played well with a dark edge and all the practical effects are nicely done and creepy.
The alien is outright freaky and once you get to the actual “altered” part, its nasty but works. I loved the nail-gun scenes, all the scenes of them fighting with the alien and while the ending is as cheesy as the one for The Thaw (which came much later), it was fine with me.
Really glad I checked this out and will certainly be recommending it to people.
