Viewing Notes

Jen had watched this film for her Mexican Art class and got it on Netflix. I watched it and after reading about it, it’s listed as one of the greatest Mexican epics ever made. I can totally see that. There’s a lot of pretty epic fight scenes in the film

What’s interesting about it to me was that it really showed how mean and cruel the war was. While this isn’t unusual in more modern film making but for a movie in 1936 based on a cultural hero to many it’s pretty shocking.

I list it as a drama because it’s an epic war movie but really, the film is broken up with a lot of great humor. Funny enough a good portion of it comes from the “gordo” guy. Even fat guys were funny in 1936 Mexico!

All in all its an impressive film. The alternate ending is quite shocking. Spoiler alert here but considering I doubt anyone is really going to see it, once the final guy from The Lions lives and years later is back home with his family, Pancho shows up. Of course the guy is still a big revolutionary sympathizer and wants to go with him but can’t because of his family. Even after they give Pancho Villa dinner, he proceeds to kill the wife and daughter, causally stroll out and declare “now you have nothing keeping you here.” That’s some hardcore business!
