Viewing Notes

I’ve been meaning to see Turkey Shoot since I first saw it referenced in Not Quite Hollywood. And since then the trailer gets played a lot at the Alamo during the bumpers. Since then I’ve really only watched Dead-In Drive-In, which I had seem even before that documentary.

Turkey Shoot was filled with one glorious scene after another. Off the bat, when the new arrivals show up at camp and are greeted by a sadistic guard threatening to rape Oliva Hussy, you know you’re not in for a normal action flick.

Unlike films of later times, Turkey Shoot seems to always go the extra mile with deaths, having a guard beat a girl to death after harassing her while she has to spout the rules, people are blown to exaggerated bits, people are cut in half, hands are cut from arms and people are set on fire. And what about that half-beast guy who kicks the ass of the weasely prisoner? It’s unabashedly Australian to me. Very aggressive, masculine and tough.

Between those deaths, some gratuitous nudity and some amazing stunts (the waterfall jump!) there’s nothing in here not to like.

My biggest question is that they made the decision, in case of alarm, to have the entire place blown to smithereens? Not exactly the best solution but it makes for some amazing explosions!

I can’t wait to check out more films from BTS .
