Overview

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner.

Viewing Notes

Fantastic documentary that had me wondering if it was really as straightforward as presented or if if’t yet another art project from Banksy. It seems to me to be an experiment perpetrated on the art scene and us, as viewers, where this Thierry guy, who very obviously stole all his art ideas as “Mr Brainwash” and sold a million dollars worth of art, is a setup from Banksy to fool as all.

Why? To see if people would buy into a street artist can come out of nowhere with no training and be a hit. To see if people would buy this crazy person as someone of value.

Is it a giant conspiracy? I really don’t know. It could be all straightforward, where Banksy had to rescue the footage to make a real movie and show how Thierry is a maniac. The simplest story is usually the most promising, right? I’m not sure, but either way it was a fascinating watch and behind the scenes of street art.
