Michele Soavi delivers again. I acknowledge that Argento is a master craftsman of the giallo, but for me, they fall short. Soavi, on the other hand, while heavily influenced, pushes the gore and horrific and for that, I love him more.
La Setta (or The Sect) has many surreal and horrific scenes and yeah, the plot is a little meandering, as it makes its way towards an Italian Rosemary’s Baby, but where else are you going to get a bug up the nose, a big black bird raping a woman and that amazing tracking shot of the water pipes? Soavi may be nonsensical at times, but it’s always interesting to watch.
