Viewing Notes

Hot off their win with Animal House, National Lampoon produced this HBO special, based around a couple watching TV late at night that starts with watching a flying beaver dam landing in a city and a guy in a beaver costumer getting out and running amok around the city. Then, as they flip through the channels and have some odd banter back and forth, the beaver ends up showing up in the various shows they’re watching.

However, at it’s basic level, it’s a send-up of cable television. They have a gay Dracula film called Dragula, a bit with a girl talking seriously about her addition to Perrier, a periodic hockey game, a crime drama and more. The later National Lampoon mocks tend to be really tame and usually unfunny, but this, despite the description has a real Vernon Chapman (Wonder Shozen) feel to it. It could totally be inspiration for him. Low budget, badly shot but with actors going all out. You also get an appearance from Animal House’s James Widdoes who is in several skits.

All in all, it’s a strange, but compelling entry into the National Lampoon catalog and worth tracking down if you can. Watch it late at night with some friends into the odd.
