Daniel Waters is known for his dark humor. Heathers, Sex and Death 101 and then even his line of zombie teen romance novels, they all feature a sense of dread based around love and trying to find oneself in context of romance. Happy Campers takes that same theme and places it in the wacky camp comedy genre which ends up turning it on it’s head.
Dominique Swain is a darling as always, Brad Renfro is solid as the brooding Witchita, Justin Long plays his dorky usual self and then you have the beautiful Jaime King as the naughtier of the female counselors. When the head of the camp is hit by lightning they end up running the camp themselves, which turns into a Porky’s meets Lord of the Flies, but slighty less dark.
Really, this is one of those comedy gems I’m happy I ran into and really want to see a few more times. I think there’s some scenes of real smarts in here. Oh, and added bonus, you get to see Jaime King topless. Always a win!
