Viewing Notes

Note that I use a 4-point scale.

It’s safe to say that I am a Paranormal Activity Sympathizer at this point. This is incredibly surprising seeing as I despise the first movie (you can hear all about my disdain for it right here: http://insidepulse.com/2011/11/04/the-drive-in-inside-pulse-movies-podcast-episode-4-paranormal-activity-retrospective/). It wasn’t until the second film that I started enjoying the series, and the third film has, apparently, made me a PAS.

Paranormal Activity 4 has garnered a ton of heat. One Getglue comment I read said that “they forgot to make this one scary”. While PA4 is nowhere near as scary or tense as the second and third film, it still has some great creep out moments. What I love about this one, though, is the cast. Kathryn Newton and Matt Shively play 15-17 year olds, and by all means, should annoy the hell out of me. Instead, they have a wonderful, charming chemistry on screen, and had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions.

The weak link in PA4 is how much focus is put on these two instead of the little boys. If we got more time to peak in on the boys while the adults were away, it may have placed more emphasis there (like PA3 managed to do), and thus, made it more tense and scary.

PA4 is not the best film in the series, and I can understand why so many people are hating on it, but I still had a fun time with it, and am excited to see PA5. It’s worth noting that Katie Featherston looks better than she ever has in this series, and even if the whole “twist” in this film doesn’t really make much sense, it’s still good to see Ms. Featherston return (who has also grown on me since the first film). I honestly want the series to jump the shark in the fifth film, and somehow show this demon. Will everyone except me hate that? Absolutely. Do I care? Absolutely not. I can see this film series getting absurd in the future entities, especially if they continue to play on some of the elements that were introduced in PA3, and furthered in PA4.

That was a long-winded way for me to say that I understand this movie isn’t great, but I still really enjoyed it. So there.

Let me post this here as well: Paranormal Activity 2
