Viewing Notes

Love him or hate him, you have to at least admire Zach Snyder’s visual flare for filmmaking. SUCKERPUNCH divided nerds when it was released theatrically a few months ago. Some mourned the death of cinema, others praised it’s ambitious visuals and Zach Snyder’s attempt at creating an original property.

SUCKERPUNCH has no intentions of being subtle. It’s a feast for the eyes and a slight workout for the brain. It attempts to empower women, while also giving mouth breathers a chance to live out their fetish fantasies of girls with guns, mechs, nazi zombies and dragons. Yes, SUCKERPUNCH has a slight identity crisis.

All that said, I enjoyed the flick. The visuals are astounding (the trench warfare sequence involving steam punk nazi zombies was my favorite) and most of the acting is pretty great. Each of the girls are pretty one-note, but they get the job done.

The story, on the other hand, is a jumbled mess. I’m sure Snyder had 4 or 5 different action sequences and tried to connect them all together somehow. It’s a shame that this just couldn’t be a straight up fantasy flick about badass babes fighting dragons and zombies. The “dream” approach really deflates each amazing set piece.

I appreciate the effort. Zach Snyder is a strong visual director and I was entertained for 2 hours by some stunning imagery. It’s a shame the story didn’t connect, but I’m down for watching this again. I’m sure there’s more beneath the surface, it’s a shame Snyder wasn’t able to make it all work. Still, I had fun.
