Viewing Notes

PRECIOUS wants you to feel something SO BAD. It’s trying SO HARD to squeeze some kind of emotion out of the audience that I think it falls flat. The movie was serviceable. I’ll give it that. Gabourey Sidibe is phenomenal in the lead role as Precious and it was great to see Mariah Carey stretch her acting legs. However, the “HEY, ACADEMY, LOOK AT ME! OVER HERE! HEEEEEY! I’M ACTIIIING!” award goes to Mo’Nique. Good God, I couldn’t stand that role. And she won an award?! Seriously, Academy, are you that gullible? In no way did I believe her for a second. Her character was so over-the-top despicable that it was borderline comedic.

PRECIOUS is Oscar Bait at it’s best. It’s a shame because there are some good performances in here. But the story is generic and really doesn’t hold water. It tried really hard, but didn’t pull any genuine emotional responses from me. And I cry whenever I watch LAND BEFORE TIME.
