Overview

I’m Still Here is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of actor Joaquin Phoenix. With remarkable access, the film follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip-hop musician. The film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

Viewing Notes

Interesting idea. Failed execution.

As a commentary on fame and celebrity, I’m Still Here could have been compelling. Unfortunately, I don’t think Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix really thought this whole thing through and didn’t have the balls to keep us all guessing on whether or not this was real.

If they would have done that, I think this “documentary” would have had more bite. However, with that debate deflated, I’m Still Here feels like a movie searching for something significant to say. It’s an interesting premise, a ballsy experiment, but it all comes crashing down by it’s own weight.

I still think I’m Still Here is worth a watch and I respect Joaquin Phoenix for sticking with a character in public for so long. It shows he’s a committed and brave actor, I just with he’d used a more interesting film to prove that.
