Viewing Notes

Machete had a lot of potential going for it: a great faux-trailer in Grindhouse, Danny Trejo, Robert Rodriguez and a slew of 1970s exploitation cinema to draw from. While entertaining, Machete is an overlong missed opportunity that could have been a bonafide cult classic. Instead, we get a decently humorous and gratuitous action/comedy romp.

I wanted to LOVE Machete so much. I like it well enough, and am glad to own it. However, the “could have been” moments creep up on me and I can’t help but wonder what kind of movie Machete could have been if Rodriguez had dialed things down a notch and made a true 1970’s “Mexploitation” flick.
