Viewing Notes

The Deep is most notorious among guys who were teenagers in 1977 for the opening 10 minutes of the film that featured Jacqueline Bisset diving in a white t-shirt. For guys of that generation, this had to be THE BEST PG-Rated movie of all time.

Being introduced to The Deep as an adult in 2011, that opening scene didn’t have the same impact on me as those 13-year-old-boys back in 1977. Although you certainly can’t ignore Jacqueline Bisset here, I just kept thinking that by today’s standards, that scene would probably be snickered at today. Especially the fact that in this film, wet t-shirt boobs are okay, but the film actually goes out of it’s way not to show nudity once the wet t-shirt is off.  Anyway, I’m losing track of the story here.  Seems like my 13-year-old self has taken over. Let me get back on track.

The Deep is a serviceable adventure film. It’s fun seeing Nick Nolte as a strapping young actor.  Robert Shaw is always welcomed in my films and Louis Gossett, Jr (where the hell did he go?!) is really good here. There’s a lot of really great underwater photography here also.
