Oh God. Where do I start with Showgirls?
It’s like Paul Verhoeven decided to make a movie full of the most unsexy nudity and most unsexy sex possible. Yes, it’s rated NC-17, but not once did I think this movie could ever make good (pardon the phrase) “spank material.” There are boobs everywhere, and explicit sexual encounters, none of which are alluring. Only awkward. In fact, one scene that takes place in a pool had me concerned for the safety of both actors.
That’s what makes this movie so great.
I don’t know if Paul Verhoeven had his tongue in his cheek the whole time or if he was trying to make a serious drama. Showgirls is such a bad movie, on so many levels, it has to be intentional, right? RIGHT?!
Saved By The Bell’s Elizabeth Berkley tries so hard here. It’s almost endearing. She dances nude, but so awkward and unsexy, yet with such abandon, it’s absolutely mind-boggling and wonderful. I kept thinking all she was imagining was her Oscar acceptance speech.
I could go on about this movie. But, I’ll stop here. It’s a total train wreck, but an amazing one. Worth checking out with friends and booze.
