Viewing Notes

If you follow my tweets (@geekcouch) you may or may not know I have a religious background.  Lord, Save Us From Your Followers really hit home for me because it’s a documentary by a Christian who was sick of the hypocrisy of other Christians.  His goal was just to start conversations with anyone without being judgmental or hateful.  Why don’t people of all faiths and backgrounds just talk to each other? Jesus preached unconditional love.  What if Christians actually practiced that? *gasp!!*

As a Christian who is sick of Christians, Lord, Save Us From Your Followers was a breath of fresh air.  Finally something “Christian” that I could actually relate to.  Even if you aren’t necessarily a Christian, there’s a lot to like about this documentary.  It’s the story of one man’s journey trying to right centuries of wrongs just by talking to all kinds of people.  The most poignant part of this documentary is when the filmmaker, Dan Merchant, sets up a “Confession Booth” at a Gay Pride festival just so he could apologize for “The Church” and for himself to anyone who would listen.  It’s an extremely bold move on his part, and one of the most touching aspects of the documentary.

I was a Christian on the verge of becoming an Agnostic for a while, but Lord, Save Us From Your Followers was one of the small pieces (along with @jaybakker & @PhilShepherd) that helped restore my hope in Christians and hopefully we all can just follow Christ’s example and love unconditionally above all things.
