Viewing Notes

Classic Roger Corman movies have a charm to them that is hard to describe.  So, when Shout Factory started to release their Roger Corman Cult Classics Collection, I snatched them up as fast as possible.

Galaxy of Terror is notorious for 2 things:

*Production Design by James Cameron

*A woman gets raped by a gigantic maggot (a sequence also supervised by James Cameron)

The story is pretty basic: a team of astronauts go to a planet to investigate a disturbance, all hell breaks loose.  What elevates Galaxy of Terror above the dreck of most exploitative Roger Corman flicks is the impressive creature and gore effects.  These were all supervised by James Cameron and there’s a level of detail most Schlockfests like this don’t have.

I enjoyed Galaxy of Terror for what it was.  The bad dialogue, the chinsy special effects, the impressive creature design and some really well done gore effects.  The “Maggot Scene” is so random and ridiculous it doesn’t reach the offensiveness it could have.  Also, with the plot, the scene does have context.  Each astronaut must battle their worst subconscious fears.  So, at least there was some thought behind this insane scene.

This Blu Ray also has a great documentary worth checking out.
