Viewing Notes

I hadn’t seen Paul Verhoeven’s TOTAL RECALL since I was a kid and I didn’t remember much other than eye bulging and three boobs and the fact that I liked it a lot.

The movie is really an icon of a bygone era when Hollywood wasn’t afraid of uber-violent action films; if KILL BILL had been filmed then the scene in the restaurant with the 88s probably wouldn’t have to have been converted to black and white. TOTAL RECALL’s violence and blood is so over the top that it’s funny.

It doesn’t hurt the movie that at its core is Philip K. Dick’s story and conflict, even it doesn’t evolve like that one did. So, there’s good sci-fi there too that really makes it a sci-fi romp.
