During the prolific, if not golden, era of Batman in the 1990s, MASK OF THE PHANTASM got lost in the shuffle, even for a big Batman fan like me. I didn’t see it until years later and found it boring at the time.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie and I always enjoy anything in the Diniverse. But, the pacing is a bit off, if anything. I realize that the writer was trying to provide a more emotional connection to Batman, but a Batman movie needs more action. If they’d padded it out by 10 minutes and added more (perhaps another confrontation between Batman and Phantasm), it probably would’ve been a better movie. The emotional stuff is well done, but can’t hold up the movie by itself.
