Viewing Notes

Growing up in the mid-1980s, we didn’t have much in the way of live-action superhero fisticuffs aside from the ever decreasing in quality spate of Superman flicks. But, someone brilliant decided to resurrect the 1960s Batman TV series on Nickelodeon (I think), and thus my love of Adam West began.

I’ve seen BATMAN off and on through the years, but it never resonated with me as a good film until this watch as part of my Great Batman Project. Not having seen it in over a decade allowed fresh eyes and renewed heart and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t live up. It’s wacky just like the TV show and very hokey, but surprisingly, it’s also very funny; there’s a Bruce Wayne orgasm scene in there that I never latched onto before.

We may never get the TV series on DVD, but at least we have this: a shining example of how a more wacky take on Batman can work, unlike Joel Schumacher’s travesties BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN & ROBIN.
