The buzz has certainly risen to a fevered pitch for CHRONICLE in the film community, so I wasn’t expecting it to live up to the hype. Fortunately, it mostly does.
The biggest problem with the film is that there’s too much buildup of the trio and too little of Andrew’s fall from grace; it needed about ten minutes cut or refocused, and it would have been a better film for it. Because of that, I really didn’t care for the film in the first half. But, the second half made up for it and I ended up impressed.
Many complain that Andrew’s fall from grace wasn’t believable. However, for those who have suffered parental abuse and being shunned at school, Andrew’s story is wholly believable, even if the portrayal of such came too quickly.
Finally, CHRONICLE should be the end of the “found footage” film style; the film really stretched it to the “believable” limits of that style with cameras whirling in the air and what not.
