THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK isn’t as bad as I remembered, even though I’d watched it as little as a year ago. Perhaps its emotional TREK-buildup, as I’ve been watching all of the series in chronological order, but there are some nice character moments in this one even if the rest is a bit lame.
What brings it down are some of the more hokey elements like Spock’s soul being carried around in McCoy’s head and a rather lukewarm villain in the form of Kruge, a role that was Christopher Lloyd was wasted in. Also, to bring Spock back so quickly…well it made his death a bit more trivial.
In short, it’s hard to live up to, let alone top, WRATH OF KHAN and that’s not lost on me. Still, the destruction of the Enterprise…it’s a bit shocking every time.
