Viewing Notes

The first STAR TREK movie is one I’ve always avoided. It’s so damned slow; the only other one I avoid is INSURRECTION. But, as I’ve been watching the entire mythos in chronological order, well I could avoid it no longer.

There’s some nice beats here and there, and it plays more true to any number of Original Series episodes. In fact, it plays rather close to the Animated Series episode “One of Our Planets is Missing,” wherein Spock mindmelds with a giant cloud-like, life destroying entity to gain further understanding. But, that wasn’t regarded as canon by Roddenberry. Interestingly, life-destroying probe is done in THE VOYAGE HOME.

The episode works fine as a regular series or animated series episode, but, it’s just so damned slow and muted and theatrical momentum is crushed as a result. Despite some really dumb moments, THE VOYAGE HOME works because of humor and pacing, which this one is absolutely devoid of.
