MESSIAH OF EVIL is absolutely surreal, and I’m not sure in a good way. In some ways it reminds me of MAID IN SWEDEN in that sort of disconnected emotion combined with a feeling of “what the fuck is going on?”
It’s all played very coldly, directed oddly, and acted poorly, but the former may have been the ideal. There are some great standout beats in the film, like the girl trapped in the theater, but overall it’s just a giant question mark.
I appreciate what it’s trying to do, or at least I think I do: create a dream-like, disjointed story that may or may not be a fantasy of a wackadoo lady about vampire zombies. Then again, it could just be a poorly made movie and I’m injecting all of this meaning post-mortem like scholars attacking a Shakespeare play.
I just can’t evoke an emotional conviction with this one other than confusion.
