Viewing Notes

HOUSE ON SKULL MOUNTAIN is a creepy-house horror flick with potential, but it never goes far enough, and I honestly felt it was a bit racist where it shouldn’tve been.

The special effects are laughable, but that’s okay. The actors are pretty bad, though, and that’s not okay. They’re all fairly stiff, aside from Phillippe, who we don’t get enough of, in contrast to a 20-minute voodoo dance scene, which we get way too much of.

The film starts out well enough in a low-budget way and with a good deal of racial conflict; the movie deals with a primarly black cast and one white guy - the opposite of most horor movies. People start dying, blah blah blah, and in the end, it’s the white guy that ends up saving the day; the white guy should’ve either been the first one to die or a latter victim. It comes off feeling standard-Hollywood racist, when they had an opportunity to play on those racial script stereotypes.
