The golden era that emerged in the early 1990s for Disney definitely started to decline in the late 1990s, and HERCULES is definite evidence of that.
I can’t entirely figure out why Disney felt the need to bastardize (ironically), Hercules’ origin, as he was conceived out of wedlock, in mythological reality. The Mouse is ok with death, but no: no straying outside godly marriage. Hera was also shown as a real peach, when in fact all mythology portrays her has a bitch of ginormous proportions. It was a definite corruption of the story, not that Disney isn’t known for doing that with every story anyways.
There’s nothing outwardly horribly about HERCULES, but it’s not particularly compelling either. Tate Donovan is forgettable and Susan Egan is ok as Megara. The best thing about it is James Woods as Hades, and his scene eating is what gets you through.
