I’d heard a lot of talk about EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE being one of the best Disney movies. Maybe if I hadn’t heard that, I’d be more impressed than I am.
It has its funny moments, to be sure, but it’s not the laugh riot I expected; LILO & STITCH was a much funnier, and certainly more touching, 2-D Disney animated attempt.
The movie also falls short in several areas, just like David Spade. Most of the jokes are flat and the villain of the piece is also by far the weakest of Disney’s evil royal set; there’s nothing fearsome about her and it really seems probably that anyone could have beaten her with a whiff of intention. And the Emperor himself: he was still a dick in the end, and I really didn’t feel like he’d matured or had any motivation to do so.
I’ll allow for the fact that the movie probably plays well with the younger set, but it probably won’t hold up as they get older.
