Overview

Ethan Hunt and his team are racing against time to track down a dangerous terrorist named Hendricks, who has gained access to Russian nuclear launch codes and is planning a strike on the United States. An attempt to stop him ends in an explosion causing severe destruction to the Kremlin and the IMF to be implicated in the bombing, forcing the President to disavow them. No longer being aided by the government, Ethan and his team chase Hendricks around the globe, although they might still be too late to stop a disaster.

Viewing Notes

It’s no secret that I’m a JJ Abrams fan; I’ll watch just about everything the man touches, though I’ve yet to take a gander at FELICITY. I’m no apologist for the man’s work, because it does usually have some minor flaws, but his work is usually very smart, very heartfelt and hell of a lot of fun to watch. So it should be no surprise that I loved MI4: GHOST PROTOCOL.

One thing is for sure: Tom Cruise is still the consummate movie star. He’s absolutely fantastic in the film and just does it proper, putting everything on screen. Simon Pegg is fantastic in that nebbishy, snarky role that Pegg was built for (though I wish they’d made his character a little more competent), and Jeremy Renner does a fine job as Brandt. Paula Patton as Carter, however, doesn’t really stand out. The role needs a more dynamic personality in the role that she just doesn’t have here. The villain Hendricks isn’t at all memorable either like Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s character in MI:3; he’s paper thin and need a bit of yeast to flesh him out.

The movie is an absolute thrill to watch, though, and borders on sensory overload at times while watching it in IMAX. There are plot conveniences here and there like any spy movie, and while it would’ve been nice for the writers to expose them fully, at least they expose one of the more famous ones from the MI series. Minor flaws aside, though, GHOST PROTOCOL is a slick ride that that demands at least one rewatch and will have you driving your car like an IMF spy.
