Knowing that it was an Eighties sex comedy, I didn’t expect much from HOT DOG…THE MOVIE, and that’s exactly what I got.
This one tries to be a “scene” movie, melding THRASHIN’ with sex comedy and I guess it works, albeit to an unimpressive extent. The Eighties scene stereotypes are all there: the villian, the girl, conflict, the outlandish dress and of course, the Activity of the Scene in question; so, from that angle, it hits the mark. But just because you can check a few boxes, it doesn’t make it a good film. The freestyle skiing is cool to see (although very demanding of a man card loss for any guy who did it), the skiing isn’t all that impressive and there’s not enough skill display. And aside from a few moments, like the hotel manager walking out completely nude, it’s not really all that funny.
There’s no real sense of earnestness in this movie, which THRASHIN’ and BEAT STREET had in spades. It all comes off exactly as seemingly intended: a product for a very targeted demo of the time.
