Viewing Notes

Ugh. That just about sums up UP THE ACADEMY nicely. I can’t blame MAD Magazine for disowning the film.

There’s not one single likeable character in this film; even Ralph Macchio is wasted and annoying as a kid who basically only ever says, “leave me alone.” I would also say Ververgaert is the most annoying character ever put to film, but then again I’ve yet to punish myself with FRED. The only mildy entertaining thing that happens on screen is Ron Leibman shouting, “Say it again! Say it again! Say it again!” a few thousand times.

Robert Downey must’ve been as high on his son’s supply as a flying Iron Man when he chose to direct this one. The writers attempted to make a miscreant sex comedy, but the script is so weak, flat, disorganized and simply unfunny that what’s left on screen is almost as unwatchable as CHEERLEADER NINJAS.
