What a brutal movie. BRONSON is one of those films that starts with its boot on your throat and never lets up except to let you take a breath of air so that you’re still alive.
Writer/director Refn’s script is outstanding and he manages to make the film and the titular character both grand and sympathetic, whether or not that’s a good thing in reality for such a hyper-violent figure. The stage-play interlude monologues by Bronson are a nice transition to add to another surreal level to an already surreal movie by way of the extreme violence; I really wanted a couple more in the second half to really complete the experience.
Aside from the brutality, I don’t know what’s kept this from being a more marquee film. I can’t believe it didn’t make more money or get more awards recognition; BRONSON is Tom Hardy’s showpiece.
